Srinagar, Mar 24 (KNO): The Government of India on Tuesday informed the Lok Sabha that a total of 68 cases of cybercrimes against women were registered in Jammu and Kashmir in 2023. The information was provided in response to an unstarred question raised by MPs Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar and Bapi Haldar. Replying to the query, Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar, as reported by the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said that as per the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, J&K recorded 39 such cases in 2021, 39 in 2022 and 68 cases in 2023, showing an increase in reported incidents. He said that cybercrimes fall under the jurisdiction of States and Union Territories, as ‘Police’ and ‘Public Order’ are State subjects under the Constitution. The minister further informed that the Centre supplements the efforts of States and UTs through advisories and financial assistance for strengthening law enforcement agencies and cyber infrastructure. As per official data, Jammu and Kashmir currently has two cyber police stations, while forensic support is being strengthened through laboratories and mobile forensic units. The government also said that NCRB compiles and publishes data on such crimes in its annual “Crime in India” report, with the latest edition pertaining to 2023—(KNO)
